Women’s events are a funny thing. Some of you may be shrieking right now thinking of ones perhaps you experienced in the past. Growing up I can remember events my mom would attend at church for the “women.” Covered dishes, centerpieces, gossip and some type of quilting craft were usually involved.
When I started coming alongside Andi on building Liberty Sisterhood, I quickly realized this was entirely different than anything I had seen before. It was safe to say that no one was going to be exchanging recipes at these events, to say the least. Instead, what we were going to do was gather, empower one another, and make a difference in each other’s lives. I had to abandon the preconceived idea of what I thought “Sisterhood” meant replace it with the movement it actually was.
After each Sisterhood, I hear stories of how women were impacted, encouraged or transformed. My favorite part is always how they start the story: “I didn’t want to come to Sisterhood because….” I smile each time, because they finally get it. They realized the point of Sisterhood - its not a women’s event, and it’s certainly not an arena for competition - it is instead a meeting point for a greater movement that is taking place in our church.
Women are more powerful when we are in it together.
Women make up two-thirds of Christians in the world, which means that if we can strengthen each other, we strengthen the church as a whole. When we build each other up, we build the church. When we build the church, we impact our city, and even our world. Women are more powerful when we are in it together.
So since Sisterhood is also about challenging one another, I challenge you to put aside any ideas you may have about women and their “events,” and be there on Friday night!
