Swaziland Missions trip: Last info session on June 11th

No Comments 25 May 2024

We’d love you to join us for our next missions trip to Africa, October 19–28th. We will be taking a team to Swaziland in southern Africa where Children’s Cup have a large number of CarePoints and churches serving their neighborhoods. There will be two Information Sessions about this trip, and you’re welcome to attend either of the two:

  • Sunday, May 24th, 12:45pm after the service at Soho, 557 Broadway
  • Thursday, June 11th, 7:00pm 64 Fulton St, Ste 502

If you are interested in joining us, or would like more information, please email [email protected].

We will work alongside our missionaries Gethin & Bex, who are doing phenomenal work in Swaziland (check out their website here). Gethin and Bex are also expecting twins—our two youngest missionaries—and we’re excited to reunite with them and celebrate with them.

Bex wanted to send a personal invitation and greeting to Liberty Church:

“We are so excited to see the details for the October trip being sent out and really cannot wait to have the Liberty team here on the ground in Swaziland. Swaziland is such a beautiful country and Children’s Cup is so well established here it will give you a great understanding of what exactly they do here and in other countries. We also are looking forward to showing you what exactly we have been up to since moving out here and what new projects we have been able to get involved in, as well.
“Since January, Gethin and I have been working with the Discipleship Team which takes care of the hands-on management at the CarePoints; including supervising the facilitators, preschool, feeding, Bible and youth clubs, as well as bomake (cooks) ministry. We work with four amazing ladies who are all Swazi nationals. Our role since January has been setting up Dorah, our new department leader, in her role and transition into being a leader. She has been doing an amazing job and we have been stepping back more and more each day.
We also have been working with the team on helping organize and carry out some of the big yearly events that happen in the CarePoints. In March, we were helping facilitate community meetings at each of the communities where our CarePoints are. Furthermore, the last few weeks have been organizing powercamps for each of the CarePoints. The powercamps are a fun event for the children to attend during the school holidays; you can see more about the powercamps at our website Gethinandbex.com.
“We are so thankful for the continued support and prayers from our Liberty Church family.”
Lots of love,
Bex and Geth

Memorial Day: In honor of fallen soldiers

No Comments 25 May 2024

Screen Shot 2024-05-25 at 8.38.33 AMLiberty Church would like to take this Memorial Day as an opportunity to publicly honor those who have given their lives in service to their country and to offer prayers of remembrance for their families and loved ones.

We appreciate that those who sacrifice their lives for their country hold themselves to a higher standard of honor and selfless love (John 15:3). Soldiers are an example to us as believers of how we should share in each other’s troubles without self-interest but for the greater good (2 Timothy 2:3).

Katie Brown, director of our Liberty Kids ministry, has this to say:

“This Memorial Day, my prayer is that we never become desensitized to the beauty of sacrifice. It is so easy to become jaded because of politics, the sadness of war, the evil in the world. But true sacrifice—to serve out of love, to be willing to give up your life in the defense of others—is honorable and worthy of our recognition, respect, and unending gratitude always. I am so thankful and in awe of every soldier, and especially every American soldier, who has died to protect their homes and families, their country, their brothers and sisters in arms, and the greater principles of liberty and justice. And I am thankful to their families and friends who live every day without them; who have also sacrificed.”

A Guide to Everyday Prophecy

1 Comment 22 May 2024

We eagerly desire to create a safe prophetic community at Liberty Church, where people are empowered by the Holy Spirit to speak words to strengthen, encourage, and comfort others (1 Corinthians 14:1–5). The prophetic gifts can be mysterious and hard to wrap our heads around. Many of us have been hurt by bad prophetic experiences that tempt us to shelve prophecy altogether.

As part of our “You Asked for It” series, Andi Andrew addressed your questions about the prophetic in her message, “Everyday Prophecy.”

Referencing Kris Vallotton’s book, School of the Prophets, Andi explained the difference between the gift of prophecy and the office of the prophet, the difference between Old Testament prophecy and New Testament prophecy, how to test a prophetic word before it comes out of your mouth, and how to test a prophetic word you’ve been given.

Here’s a link to purchase School of the Prophets: Advanced Training for Prophetic Ministry.

The goal of the gift of prophecy is to really see people, to bring out the best in them, and encourage them towards their God-given identity, and prophecy edifies the church as a whole. Here is a guide from Andi’s message on how to use wisdom with the gift of prophecy.

How to test a prophetic word before it comes out of your mouth:

  1. Does it bring reconciliation? Will it bring the listener closer to Jesus? Will it reconcile or redeem things that have been lost, broken, or damaged in their lives?
  2. Does it strengthen the listener? Will it enable or encourage the listener to live more vigorously and effectively in their lives or will they feel rebuked by you?
  3. Does it exhort the listener? Will the listener be propelled into their destiny to walk in their true calling?
  4. Does it encourage the listener? Will they feel supported, more confident, and filled with hope? Will they feel like they have been given advice from heaven or advice from you?
  5. Are you under authority? Are you planted in a local church and submitted to the authority of your leaders?
  6. Are you okay if you get it wrong? A humble prophet is a great prophet. A prideful prophet is a false prophet.
  7. Are you ok to clean up your own messes? If someone is hurt in the process, are you willing to take responsibility for correcting your mistakes?
  8. Remember that the spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet (1 Corinthians 14:31–33). The right timing and self-control are essential.

How to test a prophetic word given to you:

  1. Does it exalt Christ? Does it strengthen, exhort, encourage, and bring reconciliation? Does it have attributes of Christ’s redemption?
  2. Is it scriptural? A word should line up with the word of God.
  3. Do other Christians confirm it?
  4. What fruit did it bear? And circle back: Does the fruit exalt Christ, is it scriptural, is it confirmed by other Christians?
  5. Did it come to pass? Understand that the prophetic is not always fulfilled on our timeline.
  6. Take responsibility to steward it. Record it and play it back. Test to see the fruit.
