For me, the night began with a mad dash from the subway to our Sisterhood venue through a torrential downpour. I arrived with my maxi dress soaked to the waist, not exactly ideal for a night that would be spent sitting down, but two lifesaving girlfriends helped me wring out the dress when I got there, and I ended up taking second place in our spontaneous “wettest clothing contest”, so in the end, everything was fine!
After the initial food & hang time, the night began with some beautiful, intimate acoustic worship led by Jenn Nelson & some of our worship team at Liberty. I think I say this every time we gather together, but I love the power and beauty of the voices of our women lifted as one to the Father. We have such diverse lives and callings, passions and personalities represented in our Sisterhood (and part of our strength lies in those differences!), but when we worship together, we place ultimate worth on the One who created us all and every time, He blesses that unity of purpose.
Besides worship, one of my favorite Sisterhood moments is always when we honor one or more of the women in our church who truly personify our mandate. This time, the woman chosen was one whom everyone unanimously voted for: Ivette Delgado. Ivette is an invaluable member of our church, serving in our guest lounge at Lower Manhattan, as an incredible community group leader, and pretty much anywhere else she sees a need! A few women shared about the ways in which she has blessed them & our church, and we gave her a gift to commemorate the moment.
After this, we had a big announcement! Every year, we have a “Cause Party”, which centers around a different organization or movement that we decide to partner with and bless with donations received at the party. Andi had Gina Guercia join her on stage, and together they announced that for this year’s Cause Party, which will be happening November 7th, we’ll be sponsoring “Mother And Child”, an arm of an organization we already work with in the city, Covenant House. Mother And Child is a place for single mothers who are either pregnant or already have children, and who are the victims of human trafficking, abuse, or who simply need a safe place to stay. There, they equip the moms to be the best they can be for themselves & for their children, with childbirth & wellness classes, and onsite childcare so that the mothers are free to complete their education or hold down a steady job. Andi has been passionate about coming alongside mothers who are in distress since she first moved to the city, and when Gina approached her a short while ago about this opportunity, she knew that this was it!
To volunteer to help plan this night & brainstorm about how we can best help these women, please email Gina at [email protected].
This Sisterhood, our focus was on “Covenant Friendships”. Andi & Rhema did a tag team message, and it was such a perfect mixture of fun & powerful! They each spoke about an incident that happened with a friend early on in their lives that then negatively shaped & skewed their approach to new friendships. Rhema recapped part of her message from this last Sunday (hear it here) about the significance of “covenant” in the Old Testament, and went through the different steps that people went through when entering into covenant with each other. Then she related thesee steps to our friendships as not just women, but sisters in Christ. Our relationships have eternal significance in the kingdom of God, not just here on earth, so we need to treat them as such. Andi & Rhema spoke about different issues in our lives, such as competitiveness, brokenness, past wounds, and gossip, that can prevent us from having true covenant friendship. They then brought several steps & solutions that we can walk through in order to counteract these issues, like asking ourselves hard questions (“What is it about me that is preventing me from having the kinds of relationships I want to have?”), defining the relationships that already surround us & being vulnerable. A key moment for me was when Rhema challenged us, “It’s up to you to reach out and build the life you want.” We can wait for people to pursue us, but in the end, if deeper friendships are what we truly desire, we have to take the initiative & step out in order to make them happen.
We finished the night with some more worship & ministry time, where our prayer team was available to pray for women who recognized things in their lives that were standing in the way of covenant friendship. The aisles & the front of the room were full of praying women, and chains were broken in the area of relationships for so many!
I know that the significance of this Sisterhood night may only be seen in full when we reach eternity, but I am so expectant to begin to see the greater freedom and strength that our women stepped into last night be outworked in our church body. When the women of the house are strong and healthy, it bodes well for the health and strength of the house as a whole, and I believe that Liberty Church is headed into a season of new and greater strength, due largely in part to what took place last night at Sisterhood.
