Seed Offering : A look at Zimbabwe

No Comments 06 December 2024

As we reflect on this year that is now coming to a close, we think it’s important to remember the stories that are the real reason behind this month’s Seed Offering. Here is lead pastor Andi Andrew’s story about the recent trip to visit our church family in Zimbabwe, and why it was so impactful on her own life.

Africa. It’s hard to express how this place changes you. From the inside out I will truly never be the same. For so many reasons, there are just too many to put into words.

Paul and I brought our six year old son Jesse with us on the latest trip we took to Zimbabwe after he asked if he could come with us. I think watching him play with the children there was what blew my mind in a way I wasn’t fully expecting. I loved witnessing how children are children no matter where you are on the planet. Race, beliefs, socio-economic status, age…none of that matters to a child. All they want to do is kick around a soccer ball, play tag or “Simon Says.” They’re not aware that they’re from different parts of the world…or at least it doesn’t matter that they are. Jesse seemed so at home in Africa - almost more so than he is in NYC.

The other thing that will stick with me forever is the unrelenting JOY that the people walk in. Many of the people I met have much less than I do, but they have true joy no matter what their circumstances are. I found that the moments that change you most hit when you least expect it. I remember sitting in a little hut feeding the kids their one meal for the day at one of the schools where we do a feeding program with Children’s Cup. I was looking in the eyes of each child as we portioned out their meals and handed it to them. Every single one of them smiled with gratitude, and it took everything in me not to break down in tears. I began to think of what my children and I have access to on a daily basis, and it overwhelmed me. It made me want to cultivate more gratitude in our own lives in every season.
“The thing that will stick with me forever is the unrelenting JOY that the people walk in.”
When we got back home from the trip we were sitting around eating dinner. A couple of my kids were complaining about the meal and Jesse piped up: “You guys shouldn’t complain. Some kids in Africa only get one meal a day and they don’t complain about what it is. They’re just grateful. We should be grateful.” It was a moment I’ll never forget.
