Highlights: Union Square Community Launch Service

No Comments 24 September 2024

On Sunday, September 18, over 200 people joined together at the New York Film Academy for what would prove to be Liberty Church’s largest gathering yet.

Check out the gallery below!!

Liberty’s Union Square second community was still just a dream only a few short months ago, but by God’s faithfulness and support from within our church and other church communities, we were able to launch what we hope is the first of many Liberty communities across New York City.

The evening kicked off at 6:30pm with our guest lounge - complete with coffee, doughnuts, and a community excited to worship God and celebrate the launch.

When 7pm rolled around, every seat was filled, and the venue was soon overcome by clapping, dancing, and voices loudly singing songs of praise. In those moments it was clear that God had His hand on the new church community.

After the time of worship, lead pastor Paul Andrew kicked off the new community by giving a brief background of Liberty Church and our vision of reaching New York City one community at a time. He then introduced the Union Square community pastor, Sebastian Buffa, who delivered a message titled, “A New Kind of Normal.” The message had hearts and minds fixated on God’s provision for not only our individual lives, but how through us we can reach others across New York City and the world.

By the end of the service, 9 people had given their lives to Christ, and countless lives were blessed at what was a clear milestone for us as a church community.

We hope that if you’re in NYC you’ll join us one Sunday evening to experience what we believe is God at work in this city! For more information or questions feel free to email us at info@libertychurchnyc.com.

Our Story, Our Vision & Values

Liberty Sisterhood - Now It’s Your Turn…

No Comments 01 September 2024

I come from a long line of amazing, feisty, strong, soft, focused, determined, beautiful women. Both of my grandmothers come from good stock… they are, and were, pioneers in their own right in countless ways physically and spiritually. Grandma Lippert is still alive, 93 and ready for a trip to NYC (that rhymed!) and Grandma Green has graduated to heaven.

And my mother - Mavis, well if you know her she lives and breathes Proverbs 31. She has crazy passion, endless mercy for others and walks as a forgiven women full of grace. I couldn’t be more grateful to God for the mom he allowed me to have on this earth. I even have a mother-in-law that breaks the mold… she was the bonus God gave me as the exceedingly abundantly above measure on this earth just to top it all off.

I also come from great spiritual stock… a Sisterhood of women who are truly gathering, equipping and mobilizing troops of women across the earth to rise up, be all they are called to be and make a difference in their world, and in turn THE world.

I sat under the leadership of Bobbie Houston (and still do via podcast and the Colour Conference each year) for years in Sydney, Australia before I moved to New York with my husband to plant the church God placed in our hearts. Sitting under her teaching and leadership for nearly 10 years truly and deeply changed my life and perspective on what it is to rise up and be the woman of God I am called to be. She heard a whisper from God years ago that has now become a SHOUT across the earth in the form of a Global Sisterhood. Birthed out of the Colour Conference and a group of women meeting weekly in Sydney, an army of women have truly risen up to take their place and see change on the earth and in the church globally.

So there’s a bit of my heritage, but now what does this all look like for the women (of ALL ages) at Liberty Church? Here is a little bit of background and vision to help you see our how we can begin to play our part:

When I was on vacation in July this year I was wrestling with God as to why He hadn’t given me a specific vision for our women especially after being a part of such a strong movement of women whilst living in Australia. I didn’t want to move and just do something because it’s what you “should” do. I wanted to get God on it so I could lead the charge with conviction. I guess slowing down and being on vacation was my time to hear loud and clear as to what our piece of the global puzzle was.

The truth is that the Liberty Sisterhood is simply another part of a Global Sisterhood that God is building. The Sisterhood in its truest form is not tied to one church and one group of women… WE ARE a Sisterhood across the earth, united in cause, and we just need to fully wake up to it and take our place. So I am volunteering the women of Liberty Church to become a part of something that is WAY bigger than ourselves. We are linking arms with women across the globe, with one heart to be all we are called to be in Christ AND reach out locally to those in need in our world.

Think of what we can do together! Bringing liberty and freedom to all those in need of it. Whilst on vacation I began to think of all of the women that have gone before us. Women like Catherine Booth, pioneering the Salvation Army alongside her husband William. Rosa Parks, a Christian woman who took a stand for equal rights and launched the movement into greater momentum. Harriet Tubman, a woman who was an escaped slave and leader of the Underground Railroad that served as a Union scout during the Civil War… a true abolitionist. Mother Teresa, a woman who loved the lepers, abandoned and poor in Calcutta with the purest love of God.

I thought of countless mothers who fought for their children through the Great Depression… I thought of the women I have met and talked with here in New York today who are homeless and still are fighting for their rights and the rights of their children… who just need some value and dignity given to them…

And as I sat and thought of all of those women and all they had done to bring freedom, justice, love, dignity and truth to those around them… I felt the Holy Spirit say to me “Now it’s your turn”.

I began to weep… all of these women have paved a way for us and now it’s our turn. It’s our turn to shower the earth with love, truth, freedom, dignity, peace, justice, mercy and all things good… IT’S OUR TURN!

LIBERTY SISTERHOOD… NOW IT’S YOUR TURN!

“For such a time as this” became a revelation to me instead of just a familiar scripture- it’s really our time! We ARE born for such a time as this! Sorry if I am yelling whilst writing, but we have to wake up to this (me included).

So when we launch the “Liberty Sisterhood” on Thursday September 29th in the Tribeca Cinemas at 7:30pm, we will gather in strength because countless women have gone before us to pave a way. So let’s give honor where honor is due, and then let’s take our place.

Liberty Sisterhood… Now it’s your turn…

Our Story, Our Team

Team Profile: Sebastian Buffa - Pastor

No Comments 01 August 2024

If you’ve been keeping up with us here at Liberty Church you may have heard the name Sebastian Buffa being used quite often. So, who is Sebastian? And what is his role at Liberty Church? I sat down with Sebastian last Thursday at NYC’s Food Parc to get the low-down on the journey that led him to our church in the concrete jungle.

Let’s start with some of the basics: Where are you from? When and how did you realize you wanted to be in church-based ministry full-time?

Well, I was born and raised in Sydney, Australia where I just recently moved from.

I’ve been in different positions of ministry for 12 years, but growing up I actually wanted to be a rockstar! When I was 19 and working a management job I realized there was a real lack of leadership when it came to the local church, and in my early twenties I had the privilege of being part of a movement called Youth Alive.

Through Youth Alive I had the opportunity to lead worship for thousands in huge stadium events, tour Europe and be mentored by amazing people like Christine Caine, Paul Andrew and Phil Dooley. I eventually reached a point where I felt like I should choose between music or developing myself further in the area of leadership. I really felt that what the church needed more of was good leadership, so that’s the direction I took and as a result I worked in various ministry roles and was the youth director for 9 years in a great movement called called Foursquare in Australia.

Sebastian breaks for a minute to start digging in to the massive cheeseburger and fries he ordered, and notes that his fiance probably won’t be happy upon finding out that piece of information. Sorry, Aimee!

So what led up to you getting involved in Liberty?

Well I met Paul through Youth Alive. He visited our youth ministry once to announce an event. We couldn’t even go to the event, which I think is hilarious, but Paul asked if I’d like to go to lunch that week and the rest is history. Paul became a really good friend who has been there through some amazingly difficult circumstances in my life.

In 2007 I planted a church reaching young adults in Sydney, and in November of 2009 I felt God ask me move to America. I didn’t really know why - there wasn’t a promise of anything specific. So late 2009 I started a business, and the original intent was to move to New York, move the business here as well, help Paul and Andi in whatever way I could, and go from there! I know it wasn’t much of a plan, but it was all I had. Over the last two years I’ve been running my business - a training and consultancy firm. At the beginning of this year I was still in the process of doing all of that, and then the question came up whether I would consider helping spearhead the launch of a second community as a pastor on the team.

So you just moved to the U.S. from Australia. What’s your favorite part about the States so far?

Well I love Hawaii because they have lots of water - I go there a few times every year. I really do love New York, but I’m not a true New Yorker yet because I still love Times Square.

I interrupt to confess that I secretly still love Times Square too. We agree that we don’t want to become jaded New Yorkers who don’t appreciate what a cool attraction it really is!

I love the food - especially the fact that you can get any cuisine out there. I also love how busy it is, the people, and this city itself.

Least favorite?

I hate the cold so I’m terrified of winter.

(I made sure to inform him that he was in for a rude awakening.)

What has been the most rewarding experience for you at Liberty so far?

I believe God put me on planet is to inspire people, and I think that Liberty Church is incredibly inspiring. To see people walk into church lost, no fire in there eyes, shoulders slumped, sometimes going through a hard time…and then watch as they leave completely different with a sense of purpose and expectation that God can do something incredible with their life - it’s an amazing thing to witness.

Does a particular moment stand out to you?

Earlier this year when I came and spoke about having “An Unstoppable Life” I had a really meaningful conversation with someone after the service. It was amazing to be able to talk to someone who was going through something similar to what I had been through. I was able to see someone go from no hope and feeling like it was never going to end to seeing them all of the sudden have the belief that God was doing something good and that the situation could become something really beautiful in their life.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Well, I’ve already been through a lot of ups and downs in my lifetime. After walking through things like divorce, illness and exhaustive medical treatment etc…I found myself at the age of 30 resetting my whole life. So in the process of reinventing and recreating life as I knew it, one thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to dedicate my life to inspiring others. There is nothing more inspiring than what Jesus went through and did for us which is why I am so incredibly passionate about ‘The Church’ and the message it has for our incredibly beautiful, yet lost and broken world and that is where you will find me!

Liberty Community: The Church That Eats Together…

No Comments 18 July 2024

Our mission at Liberty Church is to be a community, a catalyst, and a cause. To us, one of the most important aspects of cultivating that community is not just meeting on Sunday mornings for church, but simply doing life with each other.

That’s why every Sunday after the service, anywhere from 5 to 40 members of Liberty Church walk a few blocks over to South’s restaurant for lunch, coffee, laughter, and building relationships. We’ve come to cherish this as a great time to catch up with each other but also get to know guests who are new to Liberty and welcome them in to our church family.

If you’re in NYC and looking for real community, or even if you’re just visiting for the weekend, we hope you’ll join us for our Sunday services and the lunch following. We would love to meet you!

Highlights From Our First Baptisms

No Comments 27 June 2024

Come to the water, come to the water of life;
It will never run dry.
Come to the water, run to the water of life;
It will never run dry.
– Chris Tomlin, “Come to the Water”

June 12th was an important day for Liberty Church. As with any new church, we experience a lot of “firsts” together; the first church wedding, first child dedication, and the first church baby. On that 2nd Sunday in June, we - as a community - experienced our church’s first baptisms.

After an amazing morning service, about 20 members of Liberty Church trekked out to Huntington, New York. Using Google maps as our guide, and swerving through the Hamptons traffic, we reached the Marquez residence around 5pm. The skies were slightly overcast with predictions of rain, and Paul Andrew joked “well, being struck by lightning after being baptized is some way to go…”

We spent the afternoon laughing with one another and enjoying the escape from the city. Then Paul gathered the group together and explained the importance of baptisms.

Baptisms are a huge moment in the life of a Christian. Jesus himself chose to be baptized. The act of baptism is also one of the last messages Jesus left with his disciples.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you … “ Matthew 28:19-20

Moments later, Paul and Andi waded into the chilly water and began the ceremony. Six people were baptized, and were made new before their friends and family.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 1 Corinthians 5:17

Words of hope, joy, redemption and faith for a new future were spoken over those in the water. To say it was a day to be remembered would be an understatement, and we can’t wait to experience more baptisms as a church again soon.
